Here’s a lil’ interview we did before for the Love Amplified concert last year, with our friend Dzul, who is the main man behind Magmug magazine, an online magazine in support of giving the regional music scene a voice to hear and be heard.
Interview// JACK & RAI
Submitted by Dzulkarnain Andra on Monday, 24 November 2008
Jack & Rai are synonymous for their laid back and down to earth personalities and musical approach. Born from Singapore’s popular bar band, EIC, the duo are pundit favorites for their engaging live shows and comedic interactivity. Rostered in for Love Amplified -a World Aids Day Concert come 29th November at Fort Canning, Dzulkarnain Andra held hands and talked to the duo about all things love and sun-shiny.
Hello Jack & Rai, what have you been crazy busy with?
Brudder! Just been a super crazy October, November and December. Basically just gigs, writing songs for a show soon to be on Okto (a new TV channel in Singapore) and our own album promos and such!
Playing in watering holes like Wala Wala and Timbre with your band EIC, is that any different from playing in a full fledged concert?
Big difference! At the watering holes it’s usually a mix of covers and originals, more covers actually. We’ve done 2 full length sold out concerts this year where our original songs dominated the repertoire for the night. Definitely satisfying to have our own songs listened to and appreciated.
There are a few events that you guys are playing in and the latest one coming up this 29th November is called Love Amplified, a World Aids Day concert happening in Fort Canning. How stoked are you?
It sounds like a fab event, you know Jack & Rai are all about spreading the love, and the message is to give love to everyone especially those affected by HIV, and to do our best to curb the spread of the disease. Aside from the message the artiste lineup is awesome! Plus Jean Danker, our drive-time buddy from radio station Class95 is hosting too.
From the organizers -Singapore’s Health Promotional Board, we got news that 33 million people today are living with HIV and Aids and at least one is diagnosed with HIV -the virus that causes Aids- per day. What’s your say on the virus?
It’s just plain nasty, it’s one of the most cruel diseases ever, and we really have to be careful and protect ourselves against it at all cost. We really hope the message gets across as to how to prevent this disease from spreading to disastrous levels.
The event is Singapore’s first World Aids Day concert. As musicians, how do you think you can bring about an impact in allowing your listeners to understand what Aids is really about?
Its just a light reminder, it’s not that difficult or inconvenient to use protection, or to stay faithful to the one you love. It’s about making people understand that the disease is REAL, and a moment of fun could lead to a lifetime of regret.
There are a number of great artistes rostered together with you for this event, namely Electrico and the always funny, Dim Sum Dollies. If you could collaborate with either one, which would you go for and why?
Probably the Dollies, we don’t have room for another drummer, bassist, guitarist and male lead singer (laughs)! We could borrow Amanda though, we always have vacancies when it comes to ladies in the band.
If you could organize a concert in support of the fight against Aids in Singapore and with a budget only limit to your imagination; how would the concert look like and what would you do?
We would take a page off John Lennon and Yoko Ono actually! An in-bed concert in an open field with people sitting around on the grass. Intimate and close with room only for those who are genuinely interested in the fight against AIDS. ‘In Bed with Jack & Rai’ would be an apt title!
You guys have been known to be fun-loving and a wacky bunch, in all seriousness, on which perspective of Jack and Rai does your songs reflect on?
It’s a retrospective side of us. The songs reflect experiences, looking back and being in the moment, whether it’s above love, love lost, love found or life philosophies.
Pen Magmug a prose on HIV/Aids now! Like now! Go!
From the wells of within come a burning desire
The cost of a sin that spreads like a fire
A hundred and one ways to protect people like me
The beginning of the end for HIV.
